Understanding Your RI Electric Bill

Your Rhode Island electric bill comes from the local distribution company and includes two parts: Delivery and Supply.

  1. Delivery: Is the costs of maintaining the grid and delivery of the electricity from the generation point to the residence. The local distribution company for your service area provides these services and the bill include these specific charges from the company.
  2. Supply: This part covers the cost to produce and transmit the electricity you consume, and this is charge to you by an electric supplier (like Think Energy) or your local distribution company if you are on default service.

Rhode Island Energy Deregulation

In 1996, Rhode Island passed the Utility Restructuring Act, establishing a competitive energy market. This legislation allowed retail energy suppliers to compete for your business and give you the power to choose the electricity supplier that works best for you.
